Metal vs Clear Braces: What’s the Difference?
Traditional metal braces use small brackets and wires to gently move your teeth into better positions. They are especially useful when there is significant crowding, when extractions are needed or when someone may struggle to wear clear aligners as instructed. Clear braces work the same way, but the brackets are white or clear so they blend in more with your teeth.
They cost a little more than metal braces, but many adults and image-conscious teens like the softer look. For most people, treatment with braces takes around 18 months to 2 years, which is usually longer than Invisalign but still very predictable.
How Braces Can Help
Braces can do much more than “straighten a few teeth.” They can improve how your teeth meet and how your smile looks from every angle. Braces may be recommended if you have:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbite, underbite or crossbite
- Teeth that stick out or don’t line up in the middle

Life With Braces: Visits, Comfort and Costs
Once your braces are fitted, you’ll come in about every 4 to 6 weeks for adjustments and wire changes. These visits are usually quick, and any tightness after an adjustment settles within a few days. Dr. Elias will show you how to keep your teeth and braces clean so you can avoid stains and decay while everything is moving. Health funds pay a set amount whether you choose braces or Invisalign, and the remaining balance can be paid off in instalments over about 18 months using options like Denticare or Humm. That way you can get the care you need now and spread the cost out over time.
